MARPE Orthodontic Treatment in CA – A Minimally Invasive Way to Expand Your Palate
MARPE, short for mini-screw assisted palatal expansion, is a minimally invasive way to expand your palate without surgery. Older teens and adults can benefit from a treatment that will widen their palate effectively, despite it being nearly or fully fused.
This treatment is for you or your teen if either one of you needs to correct crowded teeth or improve bite alignment through palate expansion. At WOW Smiles, we offer MARPE orthodontic treatment at our various locations throughout California, including Santa Rosa, Monterey, Napa, Pittsburg, Salinas, Soledad, Ukiah, Vallejo, and Watsonville.

What Is MARPE?
MARPE expands the upper jaw using miniscrews that attach a palate expander to the roof of the mouth. It gently applies pressure on the upper dental arch to give the teeth more room, improve bite alignment, and possibly improve nasal airflow. It can also help with sleep apnea, in some cases, as well as facial development in teens.
Like with a standard expander, a MARPE has a key that you or your teen must turn once or twice per day. With each turn, the suture will shift gradually, expanding the palate without causing extreme discomfort or over-stressing it.

Who Is MARPE Orthodontic Treatment Suitable For?
While young children can benefit from standard expanders because of their developing palate sutures, it doesn’t happen that easily for older teens and adults. MARPE changes that because it applies force to the bone rather than solely the teeth, and the device is fixed in place, which allows it to provide a controlled, targeted force.
The adults and teens it’s specifically for are those with narrow upper jaws, crowded teeth on top, or breathing issues. It can even contribute to subtle changes in facial shape and assist those with sleep apnea by easing airway symptoms.
Treatment Duration & What to Expect
The first step to getting a MARPE is the consultation, where an orthodontist from our practice will ask about any problems, examine the inside of the mouth, and possibly take X-rays or 3D scans. Based on this information, we can tell if the treatment is ideal.
After approval, the next step is the procedure, which consists of one of our orthodontists placing small screws into the upper jaw and positioning an expander. The process only takes about 30 minutes to an hour and only requires a local anesthetic.
You or your child can return home immediately after and will start using the key to turn the expander as many times as directed per day, either once or twice. Generally, the process takes two to six weeks, but that depends on how much expanding is necessary. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled every two to four weeks.
MARPE Cost & Payment Options
The cost of MARPE varies greatly, usually between $3,000 and $6,000. However, if your treatment is more than the expander, such as it includes Invisalign or braces, you could easily pay over $10,000 for the treatment.
Keep in mind that insurance may cover a portion of the treatment. For your part of the responsibility, we offer the option of a flexible monthly payment plan that can work within your budget. And we never charge you a downpayment or interest, making the cost as affordable as possible for patients.
To further assist with the cost, we offer free consultations. That lets you get an idea if the treatment is right for you — or which option will work — without any type of financial commitment.
